Someday

My parents and Grandparents would talk of things they would do someday. Their dreams ranged from buying and RV and traveling the country, to Caribbean Cruises, even African Safaris. Such grand plans and dreams that were never realized.

One by one, as time grew ever crueler, those grand plans were replaced by health concerns. They all slipped away to that place where unrealized dreams are collected like museum artifacts. Today, those relatives and their dreams are now long gone.

The example set me on a much different path. I understood life is for the living, and someday is never guaranteed. My Grandfather always looked at me, concern in his eyes as I would go on one adventure after another. On the day I reached the summit of Mount Rainier, Washington’s highest summit, he finally understood my desire to live life while I could. I gave Grandpa a framed photo of me on the summit that he kept close to his favorite chair.

I recall a song from the band Credence Clearwater Revival called “Someday Never Comes.” A song whose lyrics tell the story of never being quite able to learn for the past.

Perhaps we should all live our lives today without so much worry about the days to come.

Then again, maybe we should all just stay the course in case someday does finally arrive.
