Moulin Rouge
Entering the theatre, the colorful set captures the eye. The show, set at the famous nightclub in Paris France, tells the story of how the need for financial investment in the struggling production allowed a man with resources to invest in the show in order to gain control of not just the show, but of each performer, especially the lead performer who he fancies. She is resigned to give herself to a man she does not love in order to save the show, until the show’s songwriter, who she does love convinces her to have an affair with him creating an inconvenient love. Portrayed in whimsical humor as modern music is interjected, at just the right moments to keep the show from becoming too serious.
It astounds me how the shows that I have little interest in, turn out to be the shows I most enjoy. I would see this show again without reservation. A stronger endorsement I could not make.
